wabisabi
A quiet house above the bay at Unawatuna, on the south coast of Sri Lanka.
Four rooms, a pool, and the sea just down the lane.
Wabisabi sits on the slope behind Unawatuna, close enough to walk to the water before breakfast and far enough back that the evenings belong to the frogs and the wind in the palms.
The house was built slowly, out of lime plaster, local timber and stone cut nearby, and it is meant to be lived in rather than looked at. Breakfast is made each morning. Everything else is up to you.
wabi sabi
A Japanese idea, roughly: that things are more beautiful for being imperfect, unfinished and worn. A cracked bowl mended rather than replaced. A plaster wall that shows the hand that laid it.
It seemed the right name for a house on a coast where nothing stays new for long, and where that has never been the point.

A fishing bay that turned into a beach town without entirely losing the first part.
Unawatuna beach
A sheltered crescent of sand held by a reef, calm enough to swim in most of the year. Quiet early, busier by lunch.
The jungle path and pagoda
A short climb through the trees at the far end of the bay, ending at a white pagoda with the whole coastline below it.
