The house

Built into the slope behind the bay, with the rooms turned away from the road and towards the garden and the water.

The open living space at Wabisabi Villa, Unawatuna

How it was made

Lime plaster over block, timber cut and finished nearby, cement floors polished by hand, and a roof pitched steeply enough for the monsoon. The surfaces were left as they came off the trowel.

Things here are meant to age. The brass will dull, the timber will silver, the plaster will mark where hands go most often. None of that is a fault to be corrected.

Staying here

Breakfast is made each morning and eaten wherever you like. Lunch and dinner can be cooked at the house with a day's notice, or you can walk down to the bay and eat with your feet in the sand.

The whole house can also be taken by one group, which suits families and anyone travelling together.

Minimum stay, meal arrangements and the full house rate are still being confirmed.
